The Mount St. Mary’s University community seeks a Dean of the School of Natural Science & Mathematics who will be the principal champion for innovative vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the School and its academic programs.


Mount St. Mary’s University (MSMU) is a comprehensive, coeducational, Catholic institution dedicated to liberal learning in the pursuit of truth. The second oldest Catholic university in the country, MSMU describes itself as “Catholic in a contemporary way” and welcomes students of all faiths and backgrounds. Located in Emmitsburg, Maryland, MSMU serves more than 2,000 diverse undergraduate and graduate students at its two locations (Emmitsburg and Frederick, MD), promoting a holistic approach to the student experience and learning. MSMU, particularly its 120 dedicated full-time faculty, fosters an intimate and student-centered community. MSMU prides itself on a student to teacher ratio of 13:1 and that 52% of classes have fewer than 20 students.


The School of Natural Science & Mathematics integrates the liberal arts core curriculum with exceptional major coursework, allowing students to gain knowledge in their core field, all while building skills in leadership, analysis, and social justice. By engaging in discovery and authentic research throughout the curriculum, students sharpen their reasoning abilities, gain cutting-edge skills and develop an in-depth understanding of their discipline. The School’s dedicated faculty work closely with students, welcoming their involvement in pioneering research. Graduates move on with the expertise to advance the frontiers of knowledge and the moral grounding to use that knowledge for the good of society.

Application Procedures

The opportunities for the next Dean of the School of Natural Science & Mathematics include:

  • Actively promoting the sciences in the next capital campaign, which will include a new addition to the science building; developing a plan for scientific facilities and infrastructure use and expansion.
  • Pursuing external resource development, including expanding the donor base and securing resources for various school initiatives.
  • Establishing partnerships with regional technology and biotechnology firms; developing internships and experiential opportunities for students, positioning them for successful careers.
  • Building the School’s brand recognition through enhancing the solid curriculum, developing new areas of study, and establishing corporate partnerships that lead to opportunities for student internships and experiential learning.
  • Providing visionary leadership through collaboratively developing and implementing a strategic plan for the School.
  • Being a passionate and articulate advocate for the School’s faculty, staff and students, while upholding MSMU’s institutional priorities and strategic direction.
  • Working across disciplines to harness the faculty’s passion and creativity in the development of new and innovative academic programs; identifying and supporting the significant potential of faculty teaching and research projects.
  • Promoting and supporting interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Working collaboratively with other deans and the Provost to break down silos and create shared opportunities for student success.
  • Modeling and promoting a collegial and transparent atmosphere of committed service to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Understanding and supporting Mount St. Mary’s mission, vision and values; ensuring that its Catholic identity remains central to the culture of the School and of the university.
